NBC Operations Manager (Maternity Cover)
Role summary
The Operations Manager will be responsible for the overall management and coordination of daily operations at the National Badminton Centre. This role involves overseeing facility management, staff supervision, customer service, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a background in sports or recreation management, and a passion for delivering excellent service.
Main responsibilities
Operational Management:
- Oversee daily operations and maintenance of NBC facilities, ensuring all areas—including courts, fitness spaces, the restaurant/bar, lodge/hotel, and other spaces—are in optimal condition.
- Oversea day-to-day maintenance and cleaning.
- Supervise the key holder process for access to all areas.
- Be an emergency point of contact out of scheduled hours (shared responsibility).
- Lead the production and management of staff rotas, and provide coverage for other roles, including the General Manager, as needed.
- Conduct one-on-one meetings with the Duty Management Team and Maintenance Technician.
- Act as a Fire Warden, assisting with emergency evacuations according to the Emergency Evacuation plan.
- Serve as a First Aider, providing first aid assistance (training provided).
Financial Management:
- Raise, review, and approve invoices in accordance with organisational finance policies.
- Obtain contractor quotes and raise purchase orders.
- Help identify areas where cost savings can be achieved without compromising service quality or operational efficiency.
Staff Supervision:
- Manage and supervise staff, including scheduling, training, and performance reviews.
- Foster a positive work environment, encourage professional development, and manage staffing issues, conflicts, and disciplinary actions.
- Evaluate and select contractors based on their cost, qualifications, standards, reliability, and past performance.
Customer Service:
- Maintain a visible presence on the ‘shop floor’ and engage actively with the NBC delivery team, other Badminton England departments and customers.
- Act as an escalation point for complaints and help develop strategies to enhance customer experience.
- Monitor and evaluate customer feedback to identify areas for improvement and ensure high standards of service are maintained.
Compliance and Safety:
- Collaborate with Health and Safety Consultants to ensure all procedures and regulations are met for both NBC and Badminton England.
- Conduct staff inductions regarding health and safety and organize and lead Health & Safety steering group meetings.
- Maintain NBC’s central file with up-to-date risk assessments and manage regular competency update training for first aiders and other relevant qualifications.
- Support other Badminton England departments with health and safety responsibilities using online training and relevant resources.
Communication:
- Demonstrate strong communication skills by leading and assisting in handovers.
- Be proactive, use initiative, and take ownership of situations, including member complaints.
About you...
- You can demonstrate experience within health and safety, preferably within leisure
- You have excellent customer service skills with a 'customer centred approach'
- You have the ability to delegate and empower team members
- You're able to self-direct and motivate and work with minimal supervision
- Working knowledge of MS Office software, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint
- You have excellent time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple and sometimes conflicting priorities, able to work to, set and meet deadlines
- You can demonstrate initiative with a solutions focussed mind and produce creative proposals to problems
- You are able to communicate, present and influence with credibility at all levels
- You have a commitment to equality and an ability to gain buy in to equality objectives

Key information:
This is a full-time fixed-term (Maternity Cover- contract length for up to 12 months) role based on 35.58 hours per week.
Due to the nature of the role, weekend work will be required, along with early starts and evenings.
Salary: £32,000 - £35,000 per annum depending on experience
