Role summary/ Job purpose
As the Junior (Commis) Chef, you will be responsible for preparing and serving the kind of food that truly brightens our customers' days, under the close supervision of our Head Chef. You'll be given every opportunity to progress and develop your skills. As our Commis Chef, you will be working in a passionate and focused team where you will create outstanding culinary experience for our customers.
Providing a warm welcoming environment for all visitors to the NBC including but not limited to Olympic athletes, Gym & Badminton club members, Museum guests, Hotel guests and Badminton England head office team. The role requires someone who is focused, keen to learn and is driven to deliver exceptional customer service, adaptable, and capable of handling a variety of tasks and work well in a team as well as on their own initiative.
Main responsibilities
Job Description
Key Role Requirement:
- Confidently cook completed dishes from the menu
- Be a great communicator and team player
- Help with deliveries, orders and stock management
- Prepare meats and vegetables as directed by the Head chef
- Assist the Head Chef in all planning and daily tasks
- Maintain the highest kitchen and food safety standards.
- Demonstrate effective time management for preparation and food service
- Understand precise measurements of dish ingredients and portion sizes
- Execute daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning duties
- Be open and adaptable to shift patterns
- Create a warm, welcoming environment for all customers and staff
- Provide excellent customer service to all guests – being open, friendly, confident and approachable
- Proudly representing Badminton England Catering team, embodying our values and promoting a positive brand image
- Handling transactions with ease and operating the cashless register efficiently
- Ensuring a safe and healthy work environment by adhering to all Health & Safety regulations

Experience and Qualifications:
- Experience working in different styles of operation from high-volume catering to small dining parties
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and general computer skills
- Fluent in written & spoken English with strong communication skills
- Pride and excellent attention to detail in your work
- Distinctive, professional and warm personality
- Full clean UK driving license
- Level 3 Food hygiene certificate
- Working knowledge of HACCP and COSHH
- Key Holder – to gain access to the facility prior to official opening times, to support daily preparations
- Carry out Operational checks/ cleaning tasks in accordance with our inhouse operations management system
- Co-ordinate with the chef to ensure the kitchen is safe and well maintained. Reporting any repairs needed
- Undertake the preparation and serving of both food and drinks
Financial Management:
- We are a cashless site - Process till transactions through square and ensure accurate record keeping for sales
- Assist with implementation of cost-saving measures without compromising quality/service.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure compliance with health and safety/Hygiene regulations for the restaurant including by not limited to: Fridge temperatures, food temperatures/procedures for effective heating and cooling/labelling/allergen management
- Be emergency response ready including the coordinating of evacuations for the restaurant areas
Communication:
- Work well in the team - contribute to team handovers
- Escalate customer complaints or operational challenges when needed
- Foster a motivating work environment through living our BE values
Qualifications & Skills:
- Level 3 Hygiene qualification
- Allergen awareness course
- Strong customer service skills
- Ability to multitask and prioritise in a fast-paced environment
Additional Requirements:
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
Other Duties
- To comply with the requirements of Badminton England’s procedures and policies
- To undertake such other duties as may be appropriate to achieve the objectives of the post (or as may be allocated).
- Be open to further training: such as first aid
